La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin

On Dec. 10 and 11, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown L.A. will become an enormous playhouse, overflowing with music, dance and pageantry, as UCLA theater professor Jose Luis Valenzuela directs "La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin." The community will be represented on stage and off: admission is free, and the cast includes a large community ensemble of children, youth and seniors as well as professional singers, actors and musicians.

The feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated by Catholics on Dec. 12; it is of special significance to Mexican Americans, who revere the virgin as their patron and national symbol. The annual downtown production has become a local tradition.

The video on this page was shot in 2007; it features an interview with Valenzuela as well as scenes from the production.

See the School of Theater, Film and Television performance calendar for details of this year's production.
