It’s a question any Bruin enjoys answering. And in UCLA’s groundbreaking new NCAA television spots, six Bruin Hall of Famers — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Gary Beban, Dot Richardson, Anita Ortega, Cormac Carney and Jose Lopez — provide six unique answers.

It’s no surprise that Kareem’s big UCLA moment takes place in the classroom. A history major at UCLA, Kareem discovered a flair for writing and a passion for understanding the present in light of the past.

That flair and passion has already fueled six books. His subjects include black World War II veterans, his experience coaching Native American kids on an Arizona reservation and Black Profiles in Courage. His latest book, On the Shoulders of Giants, interweaves the story of the Harlem Renaissance with his own journey from child to man, considering history, sports, music and writing.

The “big UCLA moment” tv spots will continue through football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and women’s soccer telecasts. You can get a sneak peek of Kareem at right — or see the next page for the whole series.
