  • Published Feb 27, 2009 3:30 PM

Gregory Schopen first became interested in Buddhism while growing up in South Dakota. His tiny hometown, Deadwood, had its own Chinatown, and he spent a lot of time in the local museum looking at Chinese and Buddhist artifacts. Today Schopen is chair of UCLA's Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and an expert on classical Buddhism. His faculty research lecture is titled "The Buddha as a Businessman."
