When the January 2010 earthquake struck Haiti, UCLA history professor Lauren Robin Derby was in the neighboring Dominican Republic conducting research. Author of a new book on dictator Rafael Trujillo, Derby is fascinated by the history and culture of both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
