Ann Philbin not only knows art, she knows what it can accomplish in society. Since leaving New York's Drawing Center to become the director of the Hammer Museum in 1998, this extraordinary leader has transformed what was a quiet regional gem into a dynamic cultural destination. A magnet for emerging artists, the Hammer is now a rising star in the U.S. and internationally. Artists, Philbin says, are the "first responders" to changes in society and culture. And she notes that "the Hammer is uniquely positioned in this arena as the R & D arm for the arts at UCLA."
