Get Ready: UCLA Volunteer Day

At first glance, it looks like a battle plan. The detailed terrain map, dotted with flags, might almost be a blueprint for invasion. But the troops are busloads of UCLA students, their mission to lend a helping hand.

It's the first UCLA Volunteer Day, scheduled for Sept. 22, 2009. The on-line maproom is only one part of an elaborate plan for volunteer teams to fan out across Los Angeles. Destinations include 16 Griffith Park locations, plus schools and beaches. Task captains have organized the work to be done - unglamorous but necessary work like digging, painting, picking up trash. Multiply a few hours of labor times thousands of volunteers, and at the end of the day the results will be impressive.

Stay tuned: comments, photos and videos from the field will be posted here.

On Sept. 11, the Office of Residential Life sponsored a day of service - another example of UCLA students pitching in to help.
