In 2003 UCLA student Nathan Makino decided to start a kendo club on campus. His father, seventh-level kendo master Masaharu Makino, agreed to be the teacher or sensei. Now the club has its own fourth-level practitioners, and a loyal membership devoted to the discipline of the sword.
